I don't think you are going to be able to get the engine out through the top. I wasn't able to, and ended up dropping the whole subframe with the engine and transmission still mounted on it. I was able to get the front of the car high enough by using 6 ton jackstands. The 3 ton ones I had would not get the car high enough. I used an engine hoist to drop the unit onto a cart. I think the actual sequence was:

1. Car on 3 ton jackstands, wheels off, axels pulled from hubs
2. Attach hoist to engine, remove A/C compressor (leave hoses on and strap compressor to front crossmember)disconnect battery cables from engine
3. Drain coolant, remove hoses, drain and disonnect P/S hoses from tank
4. Remove subframe bolts, lower engine down to cart
5. Jack up body and put 6 ton jackstands at jack points
6. Slide cart foward with engine and subframe still together; if you need more clearance, take the front bumper off

I'm sure I left something out, but the WIS gives a good idea of how to do this.

Granted, the car is tilted up at a scary angle, but the weight of the engine is not on the front anymore. Make sure you put chocks on the rear wheels. Also you can jack up the car and put the 3 ton jack stands back in, so the body is not quite so precarious while you are working on the engine.

To answer you question about things that are easy with the engine out and hard with the engine in:

1. Water pump
2. Heater bypass valve on firewall
3. Rear motor mount
4. Alternator brushes
5. Any part of the timing gear that might be weak or worn, like the plastic chain guides
6. Anything that is leaking
