8pack, Great link to Greg Bender's web site. That was incredibly helpful. It led me to a posting by WhiteTurbo on another Saab forum which explained (with enough layman's detail for me) what I did wrong and how important the tools are that I didn't use. Derek in Durham just reinforced that in the previous post. Thanks, Derek. For anyone who's thinking about doing this let me just tell you "why" you need to get the toolkit for locking the cams, crank and adjusting the cam timing. I had no idea... (a real newbie that has learned a very expensive lesson)
The tension settings of the lower and upper tensioners, and the variances between them, evidently causes the 4 cams to shift/ tweak/ rock? and adjust slightly forward or backward with each revolution. The tookit includes a cam timing measurement tool that allows you to see this and know that you're locking in. This would explain why my car ran okay for a little whle before eventually dieing and bending some valves. Please, anyone with more knowledge, add to this and/or clarify if I'm off.
So, I'm leaning heavily toward getting the kit and trying it all again; kind of excited about it.
Now the big question is...
"What do I need to learn as I go in another level deeper in the engine and remove the heads to repair/ replace them?"
Thank you in advance for your advice and help.
