My '07 Aero Sportcombi does the same thing. If I'm on a slight grade, barely tapping the brake pedal will get the car to downshift to 4th. I've had two previous 9-5s, one a 2001 auto lpt wagon I bought new, it didn't do this. My '02 Aero I bought used was a manual.
I keep meaning to ask the dealer about this, I can't imagine they'd have a credible answer though based on my experience with them. It's actually a bit of a cool feature if you're planning to be on the throttle soon after braking, as you're already in 4th and have a bit more power. I wondered if the transmission was malfunctioning somehow, perhaps sensing enough engine braking will trigger the downshift. I've had the car for about 8 months now and have become used to it. I'm down to two possibilities, either a faulty transmission or a sensor that knows the car is on grades. And it happens even on very slight grades.
