lifters since my first 1985 16valve. If you replaced the head gasket and didn't notice the scuffing on the cylinder walls then I would hesitate to say it is a piston. When I got my first 9-5 I was told the "lifters were bad" and that was why the PO had removed the head. Removing the head to replace lifters was my first clue that the guy didn't have a clue. When I actually looked at the bore it was obvious what the guy thought was a bad lifter was actually piston slap. The scuffing was not something easily overlooked. If you feel you observed well enough then it very well could be lifters... Anyway, for me, like suggested, I honed the cylinder wall and replaced with a used piston. No issues a year and a half later.
