pretty much a complete non-issue in 2004+ 9-5's... other 9-5's and OG 9-3's are also fine if one follows the advice on this bb (or in the Nines magazine)... NG 9-3's are also fine...
sludge has been a problem on many cars, not just Saabs: Toyota, VW/Audi, Volvo and others. It is common in modern engines that use turbos. How do you know it isn't a problem for Kia?
afaik, the first turbo charged Kia/Hyundai was the Genesis coupe. it hasn't really been around long enough to know if there is a sludge problem. Hopefully they don't and hopefully you have found a great bargain with great reliability. But, let's face it, you haven't owned it long enough to know if it's cheaper in the long run... it might be (9-5 parts are generally not cheap), but the long run hasn't happened yet!
If you had a problem with the 9-5, perhaps it's that you're overly concerned with "cheaper" to maintain. No european car is "cheap" to maintain. Porsche tops everyone (Toyota + Honda included) in reliability, but they are not cheap to maintain. Cheap maintenance leads to future problems (in any car). Of course if you are looking for an appliance + only keep the car for the duration of a lease, maintenance + reliability is irrelevant... most of us here aren't interested in that! I could have just put on Monroe shocks, but I put on Konis because it's worth it on a Saab I'm going to keep for a while!
The reliability of modern Saabs is "average" in the last JD Power survey I saw, about the same as Subaru, which are widely regarded as reliable cars. Saab is not perfect, but neither are other brands. My inlaws own a 3 year old Civic. It is good, but far from perfect.
I will give Kia this much: the veneer on the new ones is a good deal thicker than it was on the Amanti...
