I not an oil expert, and I know this will start many disagreements but I'm going to get into it anyway. Now, oils do not thin out as the cool, so what happens when the oil cools is that a 5W-30 doesn't thicken as fast or as much as a 10W-30 when it cools. The opposite will also hold true, a 5W-30 won't thin out as fast or as much as it warms warms up. So as the second number is measured at boiling, 212 degrees F and engine oil runs warmer than that, 250/260 degrees F, the oil that will be thicker and proved the best engine protection with a fully warmed up engine will be the one that isn't thinning as fast over 212 F, i.e. the 5W-30. Now if there are any oil experts out there, please chime in.
