I do believe there is a falicy in my argument but it is the operating temperature of the oil. As to the numbers, the "W" indicates "winter" and the other number indicates normal operating temperature. The number given with the "W" is the viscosity in centistokes (don't ask, I don't know what it means either), measured at 0 F or -20 C depending on what side of the pond you are on. The other number, as in the 30 in 10W-30 indicates the viscosity measured in centistokes at boiling, either 212 F or 100 C.
Where I think I blew it is in what temperature the oil is during normal driving, which after some more research I think is around 190/200 F rather than the 250 or so F I previously stated. If that is the case, 10W-30 whould be slightly more viscuous on your freeway cruise than 5W-30. I still maintain though that if you get the oil above 212F/100C, the roles would be reversed and the 5W-30 would be more viscuous than 10W-30.
I won't dispute that we are in need of an expert.
