I agree 100%.
One thing I don't get, and this may be a local phenomenon, but Subarus outnumber Saab, Volvo, + Audi combined in my area. I'm not talking Imprezas - I mean Foresters + Outbacks. And here, they cost the same price new as a discounted Saab (Subies don't really get discounted here because they sell like hotcakes).
True Subies are decent snow cars, but having done some long term rentals in them, I don't see how someone can test drive a Subaru and a Saab back to back + not buy the Saab. The difference in driving experience is *huge*! The only advantage to the Subaru is clearance.
I remember back when the 9-3ss + 9-7x were released + asking why no hatch + why the giant SUV, + GM replied x% of respondents switched from Saab to an SUV... what they didn't say is a large fraction went to Subies (which are classed as SUVs), not the more traditional style GM or Ford SUVs... the previous owners of our 1993 900 traded it in on a Subaru.
Most of my friends (who all drive subies) would probably love a 9-3X! Dealers hardly stocked any wagons (yet they are the cars most in demand by enthusiasts it seems).
GM never got it! Saab had a great niche that could have been exploited further + GM practically gave it away!
I'll stop ranting, but suffice it to say, I agree!
