Actually I tried that. An interesting experiment as I expected the usual surge in rpm but got nothing as the intake/ignition immediately sensed the additional fuel and compensated so there was no change in rpm.
Dead fuel pump (no fuel) and the engine will fire on starting fluid through the snorkel and I imagine if it had been a plugged injector the miss would have disappeared with a shot through the snorkel through it might be too diluted before it hits the cylinder from the snorkel and pushing more starting fluid (ether) is not a good idea.
In hind-site it was telling me exactly what I wanted to know- sticky valve so the cylinder didn't fire with starting fluid but the fact that the engine displayed no difference in rpm threw me.
