You have to rotate the camshafts along with the cranckshaft - otherwise pistons will interfere with valves. The easiest/safest way is just to keep the chains always attached to all the sprockets.
I used combination of hammering, c-clams, small vise and a harbor freight chain tool to press in the master link. Harbor freight tool was mostly useless as its pin was thicker than needed but it made a good c-clamp.
I bought a big 4-lb hammer to use as a "rest stop" and used a regular hammer to shape the pins.
