I looked in the WIS. You go in just as replacing a cabin filter, from the passenger's foot well. You have to take out the glove-box. You have to take out the ventilator fan and the expansion valve. The procedure tells you to cut the pipes to the evaporator to remove it. You'll have to pull the ends out from the engine compartment. Evidently you do not have to pull the dash to accomplish this procedure.
A tech friend who does a lot of AC work has the following advice. When you're about two minutes from your destination and the AC system is on "Auto" and it's hot outside, turn it to "Econ" to disable the compressor. This will allow the evaporator to warm a bit and prevent ice build up. It's a sudden shut-off of the AC system that can lead to ice formation and a cracked evaporator, which is what you have. I'm really anal about this and it drives my wife NUTS!
