It is a heck of a job!. I had it done on my 99, and it almost seems like they build the geearshift knob, then build the rest of the car around it!
Taking the knob off is the main time consuming task, and another is properly refastening the top of the leather boot around the new knob. The top of the boot is tied tight around the reverse interlock lever with a piece of metal wire that is twisted tight to hold the boot in place, then clipped short to prevent the ends from cutting the leather, then it is bent inward to secure it. It is a rather clumsy process to do it, and takes some time.
