I have not rolled a cam chain in.
But on the rebuild on my 2001 Aero we did 15,000 miles ago we removed the balance chain and the balance shafts. You need to plug off the oil passages to the tensioner and the shafts if you take the shafts out. Some people cut the balance chain from below and just take it out. The engine is slightly grainer at some RPM but not much difference. Less rotating mass and you don't have to worry about the chain breaking.
I also put in an aluminum flywheel which cut 13 lbs there, so the engine is overall more responsive. I also went to stage 1 tune as well so I can't do a to b comparisons. But it is one quick and streetable Aero!
