I had to do this back in early 2009 when as I was driving home from work on the freeway the oil pressure light came on. I knew right away what the problem was and pulled over and shut the car off. I made it to my brother's house which was very close and hauled all my tools over there to drop the oil pan and clean off the screen which was 95% clogged with coffee grounds. It was January and I needed to get the car back on the road, so I just cleaned off the screen and put it back together. I ordered Bob Bright's modified oil pan, and when the weather warmed up a bit I swapped the oil pans, rolled in a new timing chain, and cut off the balance shaft chain.

The timing chain tensioner I believe was extended 11mm.
The chain pulled out pretty easy. I did pull it the opposite way of normal engine rotation. Looking at a picture of the guides, I felt it had less likelihood of getting stuck that way. I used a ratchet on the crank pulley to get it past the crank sprocket, then pulled it out by hand. Once it got past the first upper sprocket, the chain just pretty much fell down onto the ground.
After removing the balance shaft chain, the engine feels a bit smoother. Maybe they weren't adjusted properly, or since the chain was so stretched they were out of balance.
