What I got painfully aware of in this case was that as soon as the hot liquid has cleared a path "good enough", it takes the route is least resistance and couldn't care less about the rest of the radiator.
So even though the coolant was rushing around in the system and car drove ok, it was still a lot of goo left that slowly got bled off creating a slick over and over again which is probably what you are dealing with and you will probably have to flush and maybe use detergent several times before all is gone.
I hot flushed the engine block and cylinder ports and heater core while the oil cooler, thermostat and all hoses were removed so I pretty much had free access as good as it can be short of taking whole engine apart and run it in the parts washer.
But as I said, if I had known and thrown out the radiator right away, it would have saved me a lot of time so at least you have that out of the way.
