It was more common on the early 9-5 that the ECT sensor went bad but most of the time it is the thermostat getting lazy.
But when you are in there doing the thermostat, the labor and price of the ECT sensor is low enough that it make sense to throw one in to minimize a comeback.
When the ECT sensor acts up, you can get the code P-0119 instead of the more common P-0116 for the thermostat.
