Clarification... Posted by Larry West [Email] (#1140) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Larry West) on Wed, 24 Oct 2012 09:29:26 In Reply to: Re: Oil cooler, Larry West [Profile/Gallery] , Tue, 23 Oct 2012 07:45:10 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Because of a private email, I'm clarifying some things.
Firstly, if it was not already clear, the oil cooler on a Saab 9-5 V6 exchanges heat with the engine coolant. It is NOT an oil to air cooler.
Secondly, if you have oil in the coolant, but not coolant in your oil, then the oil cooler on a V6 is the primary suspect. Head gaskets are another possibility.
You don't have to see, and probably will not see any oil "leak", meaning drips on the floor, or someplace else in the engine bay if the oil cooler goes bad, and leaks into the coolant. The higher pressure of the oil system pushes the oil into the coolant through small holes from corrosion in the cooler. The only way to inspect the oil cooler is to remove it. And, as with many things on this motor, if you've gone that far, it makes no sense to put the original part back unless you are sure 100% that it is not the source of the problem.
