Thick, white smoke is oil burning after the combustion chamber. Thus, it is either a turbo oil seal on the turbine side, or an exhaust valve seal gone bad.
I don't know if either of them could be considered "better" than the other. R&Ring the turbo shouldn't be so bad, but if you price out the assembly - which includes the front exhaust manifold as that is the actual turbine housing - it is very expensive, last I heard in the $1,500 to $1,800 range. I don't know if a rebuilt unit, or replacement unit sans manifold is available.
A valve seal gone bad is a (relatively) cheap part, but to change it costs a lot in labor...
