Thermostat replacement on 2001 9-5 V6?

I have a 2001 Saab 9-5 V6 with about 111,000 miles on it. The car has held up great, only once and a while does a problem come up, which is what brought me here...
The car was leaking coolant, and my neighborhood mechanic diagnosed it with a cracked radiator. So Monday I'm having him put in a new, aftermarket radiator. He isn't a Saab mechanic, but his shop works on mostly European cars, so I like to think he knows what he's doing. Besides, it's hard to find a reliable Saab mechanic in my part of Los Angeles.
While the radiator is an urgent problem, he also recommended that I change the thermostat on the engine as well. He said it would be a "good idea" to change it at this point in the car's life. It turns out changing the thermostat on this model is a b**ch and he gave me an estimate of $380 parts & labor. A Saab mechanic I spoke with over the phone said changing the thermostat on this model is not necessary.
So my question is, is it necessary to change the thermostat on this car as a sort of precautionary maintenance? Would the radiator problem impact the thermostat to a point that it would need to be changed?
Thanks,
Nate
