Rose bush replacement mishaps

So I finally had a nice day out to use my recently purchased Sealey removal kit, purchased from ToolStop in the UK. The kit comes with all the cups and bits to properly push and pull the bushings in or out and seemed like a relatively easy task. The kit also comes with two threaded rods "just in case the threads get damaged" when using the first rod. Understand that for removal the nuts get threaded almost an inch on the rod before there is any resistance. Using two spanners, one ratchet style, I just succeeded to completely shred the threads on one rod and actually snapped the second rod. Picture this: I am 6'1", MAYBE 150 lbs. Curling 20lbs stresses my system. These rods are at least 1/2 inch diameter. Yes, the threads are very fine but please. These tools are not cheap and here I sit with a new bushing about 75% installed and a need to hope I can find a replacement bolt or something that might enable me to finish the job. What do they make those rods out of? Aluminum? It just hasn't been my day.
