I do not recommend trying to service it yourself, unless you are trained and have the special equipment. If the refrigerant level is low, there may be a reason beyond normal seepage. Have a professional a/c technician (not necessarily the Saab dealer) leak-check the entire system, check the compressor oil level, put a hard vacuum on it for 30 minutes to remove any moisture, and put the exact specified amount of R-134a into it.
One easy way to check system performance is with an inexpensive dial type thermometer that is available at auto parts stores for around US$10. Set it in a dash vent and monitor the temp while you drive on a warm day. If it is above 38 or 40 degrees F, or the compressor is noisy or cycling too quickly, there is a problem.
Count yourself lucky you have a modern system - my '91 Cherokee is getting a recharge today - 2.5 pounds of Freon R-12 at US$69 per pound!!!!! I remember paying $1.99 a pound in the good old days before the "Hole in the Ozone" issue. If my Suburban ever needs a full service I will convert to the new compressor and refrigerant - that sucker holds over 6 pounds of R-12!
