I have recharged cars with the simple $10 kit from WalMart. Never had any problems. I use the cheapest R134a, about $5/lb. I think the key is to not overcharge it. I never put more than a pound in at once. If this works and the A/C becomes colder -- great. If it does not work, I know there is a problem somewhere else. Also, before you do anything, determine if the compressor turns on at all. If it does not turn on, you have to determine why before trying to recharge the system.
Maybe I am wrong, but I just don't see how you can damage anything by putting a little more R134a into the system that seems to be subpar anyway. If there is a leak, the most you loose is $5 worth of refrigerant. Plus, if you charge it and it becomes better, then goes back to warm again, you know there is a leak somewhere. Helps troubleshoot the problem before you take it to a $pecialist.
