We just had our 3rd child and needed something that seats 5+ (with 2 carseats, 1 booster seat). Our 2002 9-5 Aero SW *almost* manages this, but not quite.
Criteria: FWD, good mileage, 3rd row seating, ACC, reliable (read - new with warranty), less than $25k
Bonuses: manual transmission, enjoyable to drive, under $22k
We ended up with a 2012 Mazda5 Sport with 6-sp manual transmission. We kept the Aero SW (manual transmission) and sold my wife's 2002 9-3SE 5-door. We got 0% financing for 5 years on the Mazda5 and it is surprisingly fun to drive, though underpowered (especially compared to the Aero).
We could have gone larger, but the 5 is very easy to maneuver and is *just* big enough for 95% of the day-to-day transport needs.
