Always suspect the battery first Posted by saabsince 93b [Email] (#972) [Profile/Gallery] (more from saabsince 93b) on Thu, 18 Apr 2013 09:04:04 In Reply to: cells go bad sometimes, Snowmobile [Profile/Gallery] , Thu, 18 Apr 2013 07:17:32 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Batteries are very imperfect creatures. I have heard that there is a 10% failure rate in the factory. another % die in the store. The warranty is there to cover these issues.
Batteries short mostly because the lead flakes off and settles in the bottom of a cell and eventually shorts that cell.
I have lost count on batteries that I have had fail in all my cars. I have a good voltmeter to test batteries and charging. I also have a $20.00 load tester from HF. and most importantly I have a HF electronic tester that will tell you how the CCA stacks up to the orginal CCA [cold cranking amps] It costs $70 or so, but is very valuable. For example, I know that one of my Saabs has a battery that is 60% right now, so I can watch it......and to know I need to replace it soon.
I would test the resistance in the positive battery cable. Disconnect from the battery and test it to the starter and to the fuse box. Should have very little resistance. Any significant resistance is a bad cable.
