In my 26+ years in the auto business I have never had a customer have a problem with a demo because of some perceived maniacle break in, we sales people are human too. I personally feel that break in is over-rated. Break it in hard, break it in easy, either way I have never every heard of a problem associated with break in procedure. I once HEARD of a little old ladies Saturn that used oil because it never got broken in, and I know of several cars that run stronger than most because they were broken in hard, like you're gonna' drive 'em, but never an actual problem or complaint.
There is a difference between cost-cost and invoice. The Consumers # is not invoice, but includes the amount that a dealer owner uses to pay his overhead, commissions, rent, insurance, flooring and such. When a dealer sells you a car for a zero profit at invoice he's still making a little, but not enough to cover those expenses. I doubt you'll find a dealer owner willing to allow his sales manager to give up this remaining small amount on a current desireable car. This small amount called the holdback is a dealers last line of defense against the relentless negotiators (i.e. Hammer). Want to make a small fortune in the Saab business? Start with a large fortune and sell your cars for less than invoice. How much profit would you want to make on a $40,000ish investment? Remember all the bills a dealer has whether or not he sells a car.
