Demo vs new -- an engineer's opinion

Here's an engineer's opinion:
I agree that demo's can take a beating, but I think in the case of an aero wagon most will be driven by fairly responsible people- dealers don't usually let kids off the street take out a $60000 (Canadian) car for a joy ride. Besides- if I was going to take a car out for a joy ride I'd take something faster and sportier than an Aero out- practicality is not an issue if you're just joy riding, why not take out a 911 turbo? I currently drive a 2002 9-5 Aero wagon which was a demo (It was the sales manager's car, actually) I think that he took the time to break it in properly and I've had no problems with it, nor do I expect to have any more problems than I would have had when it was new. In fact, many of the small adjustments/repairs that are inevitably required on a brand new car will already be completed on a demo saving you the trouble of bringing it back in for service.
My last point- if its driven hard at first, any marginal components will break right away and can be replaced under warranty. If its driven gently for the first while, according to Murphy's law, the weak components will last until just after the warranty expires.
Good luck on your new 9-5!
