It's not a clutch... Posted by Larry West [Email] (#1140) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Larry West) on Wed, 12 Jun 2013 11:14:12 In Reply to: Re: Torque Converter Questions, JerryC, Wed, 12 Jun 2013 08:35:28 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
A torque converter doesn't act in any way like a clutch, so it cannot get "heated up" to where it will not work.
A TC is a lot like one powered fan blowing on another that causes the second fan to turn, and you use the turning of the second fan to do the work. This allows the fans to move at a different rate, and to absorb shock applied to the output fan without affecting the input (powered) fan.
It's more complex than that, with stator vanes in between to "convert" the torque and make it work better, and ATF in place of air, and a lockup function, but the bottom line is that about the ONLY thing that will prevent the TC from transferring the engine's rotation into rotation of the output shaft of the TC is the lack of fluid.
The vast majority of an automatic transmissions fluid is held in the TC, and is used to transfer the engine motion into transmission motion (until the lockup function is engaged).
That it worked in reverse but not forward at some point tells me that the TC is probably not your problem (the TC never reverses direction, so if it moves the car in one gear, but not the other, the TC can about be eliminated from consideration). I'm not familiar with the power flow in a 5-speed Aisin box, but something in there is giving you a problem. I'm kinda surprised you don't have a "Check Gearbox" light on the MIU, which would lead you to a code stored in the Transmission ECU. Perhaps Anders or one of the other techs have seen this behavior.
