I did the soldering/heat shrink method- Western Union style, followed by solder, overlayed with heatshrink tubing for each wire, and the bundle as a whole. I staggered the splices, but not thinking far enough ahead I should've put longer wire splices in so there was no bulge inside the tubing. Fortunately I only had 1 broken wire so I was able to tag both sides of every wire before cutting them. I used black wire exclusively.
Actually, I don't remember why I replaced my DIY harness, other than I was tired of futzing around opening and closing the trunk as I use it 2-10x per day and my hands are usually full, which necessitates putting everything down to open the trunk. The license plate bulbs going out was due to a bad bulb now that I think about it.
I still have the original harness, but with the broken "L" it will be relegated to emergency backup.
There is plenty of room inside the trunk lid and inside the fender for either butt splices or motor terminal disconnects, and as I said I will use those next time, if necessary. I've never seen a wire pull out of a crimp connection if the proper size is used and in this application there shouldn't be any tension on it anyways.
