Hi Brian - I mean no offense whatsoever, but I'd like to suggest that spending so much time in boring traffic has prompted you to over-think this thing a bit (I should know - I do it myself all the time!). After all, the transmission in your Saab is doing exactly what it was designed and built to do - shift! I'm sure that frequent starts with moderate acceleration does not really constitute "taking a beating" - these days that is normal operation, and thousands of Saabs, Toyotas, and other makes using that transmission have racked up millions of miles doing the exact same thing for many years with no problems. And I think that using winter mode is exactly the wrong thing to do. As was rightfully pointed out below that simply puts more strain on the torque converter which generates more heat - not good for the transmission or its fluid.
As an aside, one of the main reasons stop-and-go driving is often cited as
"hazardous" for your car is that relatively few miles in traffic often translates into many hours of operation, so the fluids in the engine and the transmission serve extra duty between changes. If you want some additional peace of mind change out the oil and trans fluid a bit more frequently in recognition of your long commute.
One last thought. Sport mode does only one thing - it recalibrates the operation of the electronic throttle such that the throttle opens wider, quicker when the pedal is applied.
