Yes, there could be harm Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Fri, 9 Aug 2013 15:11:56 In Reply to: Using winter mode in heavy traffic?, Brian, Fri, 9 Aug 2013 03:32:03 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Winter Mode starts the car in third gear from a stop as opposed to using first gear, followed then by second. In order to initiate forward motion in third gear the torque converter has to "stall" which results in significantly more churning of the ATF. This additional churning and shearing of the transmission oil will generate more heat, the nemesis of all hydraulic fluids.
In winter time conditions this added heat is likely to be dissipated quickly. Not so in summer time stop and go traffic.
I know what you mean about I-95 in Connecticut! I visited there last week and used I-95 only after being stuck on the Merritt for 90 minutes in heavy traffic. Both routes were horrible last weekend.
