I always had the ones that fit in-line on the heater hose. It is the easiest to install. Cut the hose and put it in with a couple of hose clamps.
The thermo siphon effect lets the water circulate through the engine block and the heater. You get pretty instant heat when you start too.
As I remember it keeps the engine like at 80 degrees F or so.
We had plugs in the garage and in our parking spots at work. We ran the wire out through the grille, so if you forgot to unplug it is would pull itself out.
That was as long time ago and .........I don't miss that weather at all.
