Passenger mirror delamination - common? prevention?

Hi - 2005 Arc, 125K miles
Help appreciated with DELAMINATED passenger side heated rear view mirror. It looks as if the mirror glass either corroded off or "fried off" the backing - the outline of the heating element is all puffed out and the remaining surface is seemingly corroded (blackened) metal oxide on the paint usually used to protect the back side of the mirrored glass. I hope it was "only" corrosion.
I have no blown fuse, and I can't really imagine passing enough power to delaminate the mirror glass, but I'd rather not wreck the new heated mirror glass insert I purchased from eEuro. So before I put it into place I wanted to check and see whether anyone else has had this problem - and did your new glass (SAAB OEM)last ?
Thanks !
