I think most would agree that with a properly operating alternator, your battery will indicate greater than 13.4 volts (approx) with the engine running. If you start your car and it indicates B+ (battery voltage), your alternator is not charging.
Most auto parts stores will check an alternator for free, the only caveat being you must remove the alternator and take it to the store. But if it's bad, you have to remove it anyway.
Is your "new" alternator actually new, as in you purchased from store as opposed to "new to you" as in, it is from a scrap yard or someones garage?
If new from store, you may have installed incorrectly. It doesn't take much to short out an alternator.
The amount of time for a battery to discharge, 1.5 hours that you mentioned, is not excessively short considering all the electrically operated devices (fuel pump, etc) the car has installed.
