Hammer, you are correct about the benefits, though I use the conventional aluminum-based silver stuff that is available at the local auto parts store. The copper based compound is primarily for very high temperature use, like exhaust system hardware. The silver one works fine on wheels, though it is wise to remove any old compound with a solvent (lacquer thinner works well) before adding new compound _sparingly_. The bore of the wheel, where it centers on the hub, is especially important, as that
is where the rust tends to occur (on the hub) due to water that gets under the center cap. Also apply a thin layer on the flat contact surfaces of the hub or wheel. It is very important that all surfaces are clean and free from any foreign matter before doing this, or the wheel may not lie flat on the hub.
A _little_ dab on the wheel bolt threads will also be helpful. The NAPA stuff I use says that it does not affect the torque value - I think it would be wise to verify this with any brand of compound before using it in this critical area.
