All my Saabs have been very hard on batteries, average 3 years no matter what the brand or price point. I have had a number of Duralast red top batteries, my 19 year old pickup truck which mostly sits there weeks at a time has a 6 year old Duralast red top, still going strong. The spendy Duralast Gold in my 04 9-5 gave me just under 2 years of service, replaced it for free last weekend. Wifes 2010 Volvo S80 eats them too, we are on out third in that car already.
I think all these newer cars with all the electronics, DRL's, etc. are just harder on batteries. And it does not seem to make a difference on which battery or what price point. I cannot get a full twelve months out of my boat batteries and I have a bank of 3 of them, with switches. Gets expensive. Even removal in winter for warm storage does not seem to help.
The trickle charger is good tip for those that sit awhile. I had a solar trickle charger for my sailboat battery that sat in port all winter. I used to get 4-5 years out of them.
Some swear by the gel batteries like Optima. I knew a few who used them on the OG 9-3 BOARD, but I dont think they have one to fit the 9-5. The Duralast Gold is almost as much as an Optima.
