After playing with it some last night and this morning, I must correct myself.
In sport mode, it has no problem getting into 5th gear, even at 50 mph.
When I noticed upshift before (sport to normal mode) when not accelerating, maybe I just needed to give it more time to upshift, as I had been accelerating slightly previously.
I still suspect that leaving it in sport mode will result in slightly increased fuel useage, driving around town. On the road, no difference.
