There really was no difference in the daylight or night, and most of my driving occurs in the dark, so the sensor has been effectively 'covered.'
It seems that by taking out the fuse and completely cutting power to the ACC for about 10 minutes resulted in a significant improvement when I was out earlier this evening. We will see how this holds up.
My suspicions were around the mechanical - blend door type things (even though I don't have any if the codes), but maybe, just maybe, I reset something electronic that controls the mechanical works. Sure would be nice to avoid shoving all 6'4" 250 lbs of me under the dash in a freezing garage, at least for now.
I will post how things progress.
