Hello,
When you moved the key vertically, did you move it up or down?
There are several parts to the "Key Mechanism". They are:
1) Lock Cylinder
2) Anti-Theft transmitter (ring that has the words "Lock, Off, On, and Start" on it.
3) Ignition Switch
4) Key itself with electronics
When you say you waited 5 - 45 seconds for the car to start, was it cranking during that period or was it silent?
The lock cylinder is just that, a lock as you'd find in a door. The key mates with it. Sometimes it jams, and sometimes it doesn't move vertically. If it's stuck in the "up" position it may not be engaging the ignition switch and then the starter will not actuate and it will not "crank".
The ignition switch is an electrical box that has a slot that mates with the lock cylinder. It has contacts in it that distribute current to various components. It is located beneath the lock cylinder and requires removal of the centre console for replacement (about a three hour job for the home technician).
Take a good look at what you're seeing and report back.
Cheers,
Doug
