Hello,
The symptom for the lock cylinder typically is that it won't turn, or it sticks in the "UP" position.
The symptom I encountered with a bad switch was all the warning lights in the dash turning off as well as the dash lights. I also got some seemingly unrelated malfunction codes when the CEL illuminated. My wife experienced a loss of power to the fuel pump and the car shut down while driving. That was unnerving to say the least.
You may have encountered another failure mode of the electrical portion of the ignition switch. Alternately, it could be a relay that is taking some time to fully engage.
If the anti-theft device that surrounds the key malfunctions it causes a signal from the SID that says "Key not recognized". I presume your car does not do that.
If the up/down motion seems to shorten the start sequence every time, then to me it does sound like your switch could be at fault.
There are others on this board that can help you with pinpointing and verifying a switch failure. The switch is tedious to get to, and remove but not particularly fidgety. It would be a shame to replace it only to have the problem persist.
