... and the New Drive Shaft Seal is In Posted by DnstrDan [Email] (#1361) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DnstrDan) on Wed, 21 Oct 2015 23:33:42 In Reply to: Re: Drive Shaft Seal Removal & Replacement - Help Requested, Bernie [Profile/Gallery] , Sat, 17 Oct 2015 19:19:28 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
And what a nightmare that was to get seated correctly. I must have spent three dozen attempts over three hours getting it aligned properly. For my tools, I used both a short piece of galvanized pipe as well as a PVC tube with a bearing/seal driver on the far end. The root cause of the difficulty was that there was no foolproof way to ensure that the driving tool (and hence the seal) was perfectly normal to the plane of the bore. Just the slightest twitch or wobble caused one edge to go in first. The interference fit of the seal with the bore is necessary but problematic. I wish the seal was manufactured with a more pronounced bevel.
In the end, and after consulting with my Saab mechanic friend Robert of 2 Guys from Sweden in Los Angeles, I went for broke, said a prayer and used a harder whack. It finally seated true and flush.
My recommendation for others who might tackle this job is to buy an extra seal in case you ruin one getting your technique down pat. Seals are cheap, your time is not.
