2006 9-5 Aero spec 9-5 5 speed 95,000 miles
Was experiencing episodes of the idle stuttering, recovering and running up to 1,000 rpm and dropping back into a steady idle. Hmm, maybe O2 sensor?
That started happening more frequently, accompanied by a hesitation or stumble at part throttle, steady state driving, a feeling kind of like chain snatch on an old motorcycle. So I parked this car in favor of my 2008 Aero until I could work on it today.Research said clean or replace the throttle body.
Pulled the intake pipe off of the throttle body and used Gunk throttle body cleaner as instructed on the can. Engine running and 30-60 second sprays.
Engine died with that, so I tried again, this time rotating the throttle cable link to a higher rpm, but the engine could still not take a sustained blast from the cleaner. With the engine off, I blocked the butterfly open and sprayed the inside and hit the edges of the butterfly valve with spray. Before it could dry, I used a microfiber towel to clean the walls and the butterfly valve edges. Had to do that three times until the cloth didn't pick up any more carbonized buildup.
Put everything back together and started the car, idle was initially high, but after two or three minutes of idling it went back to a steady 750-800 rpm idle. Twenty minute test drive shows the stumbling idle and surging part throttle symptoms are gone. Car performs well from idle to red zone boost and feels cured. No codes.
The car is cooling now and I will pull the Mass Air flow unit and spray that with the CRC brand air flow unit cleaner and take another drive.
The road test in between the two procedures will isolate any problems I may encounter as it ran fine after the throttle body cleaning; if I have trouble later it is probably the air sensor and not the throttle body.
Hope this helps anyone with similar issues, an easy DIY procedure for $12 worth of poisonous solvents in cans. Do this outside due to the fumes of the solvents.
