Agree with KW.
Given the age of your car, if you haven't replaced the positive battery cable, it probably is sketchy at best, and may be contributing to your charging issues.
As the cable corrodes internally (and often invisibly), the increased resistance causes the alternator to work much harder and heat up much more, which is not good for its longer term life.
