I like the services On-Star provides and will probably renew my account once the one year trial period has expired. I've found their directions (both driving and to local buisnesses like restaurants) to be accurate and helpful. When getting directions they've given me distances between each turn along with total distances (which can be programmed into SID for ETA) They've also given me road names in addition to numbers and told me if the name of the road will change over the course of my trip. I am concerned to hear that should my airbag deploy, I may not get the help I'm expecting. Being in Canada, I haven't had the chance to try out personal calling or virtual advisor (for traffic and such) but the calling feature and the email function sound like they would be convenient- What do you guys in the States think of these features? I think they will be starting here in Toronto in the fall. Your on-star account also gives you a free email address (like you need another one) from which you can check most of your other email accounts and trip planning similar to what you'd get from CAA (AAA in the states) So if you calculate the savings on CAA and cell phone (I realize you still have to buy your minutes) then the price starts to look better. You can even check and reply to your work email on the way in in the morning to save a half hour when you arrive. I understand that virtual advisor has a bunch of other features like stock quotes and horroscopes to keep you entertained when you're sitting in traffic.
In case any of you are wondering- No, I don't work for On-star and I'm not affiliated with them in any way except for being a (fairly) satisfied customer.
Theoretically, You can press the button, have them tell you exactly how to get where you are going and how far away it is, you can program the distance into your SID, and then use On-star to call your destination and advise them of your arrival time. You could even have them book a lunch reservation for the approximate time you'll arrive- pretty slick if you ask me.
