My bet is that it's the oil sender dripping onto a hot exhaust - giving a smell like diesel exhaust that then is drawn up into the HVAC fresh air intake. I've had that happen on mine at least twice in 14 years.
The oil pressure sender is located near (above?) the starter on the firewall side of the block on the V-6
