Roughly two months ago I posted a message regarding my "blue smoke" problem. My 2001 9-5 was puffing a small cloud of smoke on a cold start, but like yours, not always (usually just in the morning). Anyway, I left the car at the dealership overnight, and the Saab Tech witnessed the smoke the following morning when he started. He immediately diagnosed the problem as a faulty turbo. I was a bit sceptical; however, he replaced it about 3 weeks ago, and the problem is gone. Interestingly, I seem to be getting a bit more boost as well. When I was in getting my regular service last weekend, I spoke to him about it, and he said that the perceived "extra boost" is not likely my imagination. He said the replacement turbo has been redesigned (new part #) is slightly smaller than its predecessor. It, therefore, spins up faster.

By the way, apparently the problem with the turbo is a faulty seal on the turbine (hot) side of the unit. Small amounts of oil leak into the spinning turbine and exit the exhaust. Aside from causing damage to the catalytic converter over the long term, this isn't suppose to be harmful, but I would have it replaced anyway.

Finally, my Saab tech was recently awarded the distinction of the most skilled Saab Tech in Canada, and his colleague is in the top 10, so I think these guys know what they're doing.
