... I replaced the tired and buzzy OEM speakers (both dash tweeters and the front-door midrange speakers) on my venerable '99 with the Harman-Kardon Infinity Kappa 60.11cs about four years ago. (You can get them from Amazon for $155.) For the front doors, I had to use a Dremel grinder to shave the inside ribs of the OEM mounts, then drill four new screw holes, to accept the 6.5" speakers. For the 3/4" tweeters in the front dash, I used the supplied "starfish" mount fastened underneath a fabricated MDF adapter plate, so that the domes would not interfere with the stock speaker covers. Connections to the auto harness were simplified by using Metra 72-6512 connectors; no harness cuts or splices were required. The improvement in sound quality is remarkable. I mostly listen to jazz; the vocal phrasings, string and wind instruments are very crisp, articulate and well-blended. I like them so much that I'm probably going to swap them to my '04 before I sell the '99.
The rear parcel shelf woofers were also shot; I replaced those with used Harmon-Kardon / BMW 65.13-8369939 speakers of equivalent size and impedance that I procured from the 'Bay. About $42 for the pair.
