I too am coming from the BMW/Audi world, and I get the feeling that just to survive Saab has to deal much more than other brands. They are not on most people's shopping lists. This year alone, they sent me two semi-desperate invites to come and test drive and get a $50 Amex gift certificate, and I'm not even a past owner! Then, to seal the deal, they gave me a coupon for $500 off a purchase or lease. That, coupled with the amazing lease running at an Orange County (CA) dealership, made it a pretty simple financial decision.
My tip for people planning to keep their cars is to get an extended warranty, regardless of make or model. Cars today are just too complicated and even a midsize repair can run into the thousands of dollars. You can either get the warranty at purchase or up to when the factory warranty has a month left to run. The only advantage to buying earlier is you have longer to amortize the cost, since it costs the same whenever you buy it!
