Unusual (?) Coolant leak... Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Tue, 6 Aug 2019 17:21:23 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
2005 9-5 wagon. Just did 14 hours of highway driving yesterday and a couple more today... Before leaving, I got a low coolant message and it was about half an inch under the seam so I topped it up, drove some to test. No leaks, no issues. Did the 14 hour drive seemingly ok. At the end of a couple hours driving today, I parked the car and about an hour later noticed a big puddle under the driver's side. Was dripping from the CV Boot. Driver's side.
Popped the hood, coolant was down again about a half inch under the seam... Outside the tank it was wet with coolant above the seam and it looks like it came out via the cap, but it seems strange to me that one could lose that much coolant through a cap to make a puddle. The wet area was about 6" wide by about 2-3 feet long (parked on a slight hill) so lots of coolant!
The car drove fine. No overheating that I noticed - needle in the middle of the gauge. Was running AC as it has been moderately hot and sunny lately...
My initial thought was cracked tank... But there seemed to be coolant trails from the cap down...
I will check if I have another cap to test...
Any other thoughts?
Thanks!
