I recommend a max rpm of about 4000 for the first 1000 miles. You have it right about varying the rpms. You can and should exercise that gas pedal though. Occasional _short_ bursts of heavy throttle (as in passing that slowpoke who is doing 70 in front of you) are beneficial - the increased combustion chamber pressure helps to seat the rings against the cylinder walls.
Let the fluid temps (water and oil) come all the way up before using more than light throttle pressure after your first start of the day - 5 minutes is about right. You have to guess about the oil temp, but remember it lags well behind the water temp as your engine warms up. You want to keep that boost gage (sorry - "Turbo" gage) needle away from the high end of the scale until all the fluids are at their normal operating temperature.
IMHO, the MOST important thing to remember is that you don't want large lugging loads (low rpm and heavy throttle) for long periods of time. That is murder on a new engine. Downshift one or two gears first, then punch it - both you and your motor will be happy!
And cool down that turbo before shut-down. Saab dealers say it isn't necessary - baloney! Drive easy the last couple of miles before you turn off the key, and the turbo will have a chance to cool significantly before the vital fluids stop flowing.
If it were me starting out with a brand new car on a long trip, I would stay off the freeways entirely for at least the first 500 miles. Droning along a multi-lane highway isn't all that fun anyway in a 9-5, unless you are doing triple digit speeds.
Have fun and enjoy your car!
