It's the black plastic Bosch valve on the final intake.

What it does it that it bleeds away excess air pressure back to the turbo intake when you lift the throttle, it also allows for sucking in air bypassing the turbo when this would slow down the engine. As boost builds up, the valve shuts off, so that only the compressed air goes to the engine until you reach the maximum boost or lift the throttle. This is achieved with the little vacum pipe on the right side of the valve, the vacum is controled by the ECU and is also obtained from the intake. Under boost a the ECU will create vacum if you reach max boost (don't ask me how but you can see where) but the spring rate in the valve has nothing to do with maximum boost, unless you use a way too stiff spring.
Thus a better valve at this place makes a huge difference, as it gives better boost bleed off and build up control.
And as you see it's easy to replace / install.
Regards,
Coolknight
